A Lafayette Consolidated Government plan to extend the ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ Common bike path will provide a direct link between the main campus and ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ Common.

The project, slated to begin next spring, will add about 1.25 miles to the existing two-mile path along Cajundome Boulevard.

The path, which was opened in fall 2011, spans two points between Eraste Landry Road and Johnston Street near the Ira Nelson Horticulture Center.

The extension will stretch the ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ Common path from the horticulture center to East Lewis Street. The new portion of the path will consist of a route via St. Michael and St. Julien streets, and will go through Youth Park and across St. John Coulee.

The current ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ Commons path was funded by a $1 million Federal Transportation Enhancement Grant.

In June 2012, LCG, in cooperation with ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ of ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ at Lafayette, received a $507,000 Federal Transit Administration grant.

Another federally-funded LGC project will link the existing ÑÇÖÞ×ÔοÊÓƵ Common with a more than 1-mile stretch that will end at the existing Parc Sans Souci trailhead.

Work on that extension is anticipated to begin this fall.
