ULearn Certified Course Designer

The "ULearn Certified Course Designer" distinction recognizes faculty who have completed training to develop and design their own online or hybrid course in accordance with national design standards of quality.

Faculty can earn the ULearn Certified Course Designer distinction through our Workshop Series or Portfolio. Prior to enrolling in training, faculty must obtain department head approval. This endorsement confirms that the faculty member will be teaching online or hybrid courses for the university, and must be on file with the Office of Distance Learning before the faculty member can be registered.

Workshop Series

This is ideal for faculty who intend to design an online or hybrid course. This option includes the following steps:

Step 1: Complete the Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (QM) workshop (and all subsequent refreshers).

Step 2: Complete ODL 100 Moodle Basic Training, a self-paced, asynchronous workshop.

Step 3: Complete ODL 310 Course Design Practicum facilitated by the Office of Distance Learning. At the end of the six-phase design/build experience, you will have created your own online or hybrid course based on the Quality Matters standards.

Portfolio

Ideal for faculty who have previously designed an online course. This option includes two steps:

Step 1: Complete the Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (QM) workshop (and all subsequent refreshers).

Step 2: Submit an electronic portfolio using the Portfolio Checklist – Course Designer provided by the Office of Distance Learning. The final portfolio will include a narrative demonstrating your understanding of course design principles, a link to your course in Moodle, and confirmation that all 22 Quality Matters Essential standards have been met.
